Srī Gothamī ārāma temple, located in the southwest of Sri Lanka, Olaboduwa, near Horana, is home nunnery to the venerable bhikkhunī Visuddhi therī, where she ordained, lived and practiced after her arrival from Europe in 2003-2009.
The venerable bhikkhunī Vijithā and the venerable bhikkhunī Dhamma Darshikā, are two of the most senior of the Theravāda bhikkhunīs in the world. In addition to teaching the Dhamma and meditation, they are engaged in social activities, providing for the needs of people in the local village, taking care of people who are severely sick, either at their homes or at the hospital, donating them not only some emotional support and comfort, but also material needs.
Their modest Buddhist nunnery is a place where the bhikkhunīs’ immense compassion attracts many people from the neighborhood who want to bring donations to the temple, which is equally distributed among those in need. The venerables are also helping children, teaching them the basics of ethics, the Buddha's teachings, meditation, they are taking care of pregnant mothers and of those who seek temporary shelter, for example after natural disasters.
The venerable Vijitha, thanks to her monastic seniority, ordained almost all the novice nuns (sāmaṇerī) in this locality in Sri Lanka, as well as several other nuns from the West. She is an experienced teacher of Dhamma-vinaya (Buddha's teachings – Rules of Conduct for the nuns) and she also teaches Sanskrit and Pāḷi.
