The Angela Home project was focused on supporting a Buddhist home for girls in Sri Lanka, located near the city of Colombo. Established in 1951 as a charitable institution, the home provided a safe environment for girls between approximately 5 and 18 years of age.

These were children who had lost both parents or had been abandoned and could not grow up in a family environment. Many of them were placed in the home by court decision. At the time of our cooperation, around 17–25 girls were living there.

Purpose and Daily Life

Angela Home served as a place where the girls could:

  • find safety and basic living conditions

  • attend school within the local community

  • grow up in an environment guided by ethical and Buddhist values

Although the conditions were not easy, the home represented an important source of stability and hope in their lives.

Our Support

Representatives of our organization visited the home repeatedly and provided both material and practical support. This included:

  • school supplies

  • hygiene and medical items

  • small gifts for the children (toys, sweets)

In 2011, financial support was provided for the construction of a new fence, which was urgently needed for security reasons. The original fence was in poor condition and did not ensure sufficient protection.

Challenging Living Conditions

Over time, it became clear that the home was facing serious difficulties:

  • buildings were in very poor technical and hygienic condition

  • inadequate sanitation and drainage systems

  • presence of mosquitoes and increased risk of disease

These factors significantly affected both the quality of life of the children and the overall functioning of the home.

Reasons for Closure

The situation worsened further due to a serious conflict with a neighboring individual who unlawfully occupied part of the land belonging to the home. This dispute was accompanied by threats and aggressive behavior.

The management of the home faced a difficult decision. Considering:

•the safety of the children

•limited financial resources for legal action

•the long-term unsustainability of the situation

It was ultimately decided to leave the premises.

What Happened Next

The girls were gradually relocated:

•first to a nearby home

•later to other similar institutions

This ensured their safety and continuity of care, even though they could no longer remain in Angela Home.

Continuing Support

Although the Angela Home project in its original form came to an end, our support did not stop. We continue to focus on helping children in similarly difficult life situations, especially where there is a need to improve basic living conditions and provide a safe and dignified environment.
