We help poor families that are purseless in Sri Lanka, especially in the areas that are affected with natural disasters. We help to organize the vital important food, water, clothing, blankets, medicines and shelters. Travelling to reach the very often remoted destinations where the people are in need the most is very demanding. The destinations are being too remote and far-away.

Help by your own eyes

At the end of the year 2014 during the Sri Lanka visit of the  venerable bhikkhunī Visuddhi there were a huge landslides in Nuwara Eliya.  It is the highest located area in Sri Lanka.

The  nuns expedition including the venerable Visuddhi managed to act fast and got into the most affected spot in the area. Many families lost their homes and shelters, some of the other families were endangered constantly and could lose their homes. Many villages were totally destroyed in some of the areas. The people were left with nothing.

“A very great unusual floods appeared during the rainy season in 2014. Some of the areas were heavily damaged. The harm and loss were caused to a great extend. This action was not planned much in advanced. We actually bought the food, the basic necessities and we started the journey to help and to rescue,” said the venerable
Visuddhi. We bought the basic necessities for the children such as rice and other sorts of food, clothing, school exercise books and children pastel crayons. Usually there would be a demanding journey taking about twelve hours back but the nuns decided to sleep over in the area till the next day. “

For us, nuns, it was not at all easy to reach this town. The trials were in a terrible stage and the roads were blocked by fallen stones. Our fully loaded car had to weave in and weave out across the tea plantations in the mountains. It was extremely dangerous. The land was constantly moving, however, at the end we reached the village in the mountains through the serpentine road,” narrates the venerable Visuddhi. The nuns like to do this charitative activities because it is very helpful and beneficial to many people. Still only a few people can imagine which threats and risks need to be undertaken by the nuns to help the others.
