Help by your own eyes

At the end of the year 2014, while venerable Bhikkhunī Visuddhi vas visiting Sri Lanka, there was unexpected landslides in Nuwara Eliya, which is the highest located area in the country.

The group of nuns, including venerable Bhikkhunī Visuddhi, managed to act quickly and reach the most affected areas in a  short time. Many families lost their homes and shelters, some of the other families were constantly endangered and could suddenly lose everything. In some of the areas, many villages were completely destroyed. The people were left with nothing more than their own bodies.

“A very great unusual flood appeared during the rainy season in 2014. Some of the areas were heavily damaged. The harm and loss were caused to a great extent. This action was not planned much in advance. We actually bought the food, the basic necessities and we started the journey to help and to rescue,” said venerable Visuddhi. “We bought the basic necessities for the children such as rice and other sorts of food, clothing, school exercise books and children pastel crayons. Usually there would be a demanding journey taking about twelve hours to go back, in fact the nuns decided to sleep over in the area till the next day.”

For us, nuns, it was not at all easy to reach this town. The trials were in a terrible stage and the roads were blocked by fallen stones. Our fully-loaded car had to weave in and weave out across the tea plantations in the mountains. It was extremely dangerous. The land was constantly moving, however, at the end we reached the village in the mountains through the serpentine road,” narrates the venerable Bhikkhunī Visuddhi. The nuns are always ready to do these caritative activities because they are helpful and beneficial to many people. Still only a few people can imagine which threats and risks need to be undertaken to help the others.
