Sakyadhita Training and Meditation Centre

There, children also learn Dhamma (Buddha's teachings), in addition to traditional school subjects.

At the moment the nunnery lacks school-books, so children receive only exercise books in which they can write in during the classes. Having school-books would allow them to do some self study at home, and practice their reading skills.

Reading and impersonating jātakas, is the next form of teaching. Those are the stories from the past Buddha's lives bringing always a very valuable moral message. Rehearsals of the theatre performance on this topic is one of the most popular activities in the nunnery school. We endeavour to make sure the kids have a good time and a positive school environment.

Both the theatrical performances and the Dhamma classes are held in the main hall of the school building, which is located in the center of the village. It is relatively old, ruined and it does not offer a healthy environment for the children. For these reasons Suriya Lamai is aiming to collect enough fundings to renovate it.

In the school of Dhamma the nuns lay extra stress on ethics. In the ārāma the children receive life teaching, they help with cleaning and take care of the center activities, they learn how to dine and how to act in in groups of children and adults.

School-books and charges for one young nun for one year = 52.000 (Rs) Rupees, (346,- EUR)
Register charges = 40,- EUR
Expenditures for the class and commuting = 240,- EUR
Cost for books  = 66,- EUR

2. Orphans from the home of "Angela Home"

In this home, Suriya Lamai helped girls who lost both of their parents or were abandoned for unknown reasons. 21 girls of age between five to eighteen lived in this orphanage located close to the Sri Lanka capital Colombo. This home was established in 1951 as a charity, and in 2010, it was newly registered and renamed “Angela – a Center for a Child Development“. Some representatives of our organization visited the home over several years. They delivered school gadgets and accessories, hygienic and sanitary aids to the girls. We also helped to build a new fence.

3. Children from the Nuwara Eliya mountain area

Nuwara Eliya is the name of the highest place in the mountains area in Sri Lanka. Families who live there with their children are often disadvantaged due to the distance from towns. In 2014 during the visit of Venerable Visuddhi there was a devastating landslide. Many families lost their homes, losing everything they had, and the others were in an unstable condition. “Very unusual floods appeared during the rainy season. Some of the areas were heavily damaged. The harm and loss were caused to a great extent. This action was not planned much in advance. We actually bought the food, the basic necessities and we started the journey to help and to rescue,” said the venerable Visuddhi. We bought the basic means for the children such as rice and other sorts of food, exercise books and pastel crayons. We could deliver supplies to family and children for an amount of 4.000, - EUR.
