Emergency Relief after Landslides – Nuwara Eliya (2014)
Nuwara Eliya is a mountainous region in central Sri Lanka, one of the highest and most remote areas of the country, where many poor families with children live in very fragile conditions.
In 2014, after an unusually intense rainy season, devastating landslides struck this region. Entire villages collapsed, homes were destroyed, and many families were left without shelter, food, or any basic necessities. The situation remained dangerous, as the soil was still unstable and further landslides threatened the area.
Bhikkhunī Visuddhi, together with nuns from the Sakyadhita centre, undertook an emergency relief journey to support the affected communities. The trip was not planned long in advance. As soon as they learned about the situation, they gathered essential supplies—mainly rice, clothing, and basic items—and set out to help.
The journey itself was extremely demanding and risky. The group departed at 4 a.m. and travelled for approximately 12 hours through difficult mountain terrain. Roads were in very poor condition, often blocked by fallen trees, and in many places the vehicle had to navigate narrow paths through tea plantations. Continuous rain and unstable ground made the journey even more dangerous.
Despite these conditions, they reached the affected villages, where they spent several hours distributing food supplies, clothing, and small gifts for children, such as notebooks and coloured pencils. Many of the people they met had lost everything and were standing without any support or shelter.
Although such journeys carry significant risks, the nuns undertook this work out of compassion and a deep commitment to helping those in need. This relief effort became an important expression of direct, immediate support for communities facing sudden disaster.
