Underprivileged families

Our help is focused on families that live in hardly accessible areas of Sri Lanka.

Suriya Lamai provides food, clothing and medical care for those families. Our priority consists of improving their life standards, providing them with long-term medical care, and supporting education for children and illiterate adults. Often girls from these families attend the women monastery “Sakyadhita“, which is supported by Suriya Lamai. Here they can receive food, water and education for free.

How can I help?

  • Give medicine for a sick member of the family for a month = 20,- EUR

  • Give rice and vegetables for one family for a month = 55,- EUR

  • Give clothing and school uniform for a child for a year = 85,- EUR

  • Give a small brick house for one family = 2.683,- EUR

Story of family

Disal Teejana

A mother came with a small two year old boy, Disal Teejan, to the monastery Olabudowa. They bought a property there. The boy lost his father when his mother was in her second month of pregnancy, so she.so she was obliged to work hard all day long to support herself and her unborn child. Since he was born, he spent the majority of his time in the monastery. We supported the family in the first years to enable them to have the basic necessaries of life (food, clothing).

Sudes Danuska

The venerable bhikkhunī Visuddhi found a small boy, Sudese Danusku, during her pindapāta walk (nun and monk walk and wait to receive some food offering from lay villagers), who was about 8 years old. He was found alone at home. He was illiterate, and he did not know how to speak. The venerable Bhikkhunī took him to the monastery. She started to teach him how to speak to enable him to start attending school.

Sujit Kumara

A deaf boy, named Sujit Kumara, was helped by the venerable Bhikkhunī to attend a school with mentally disabled children. His mother did not have any financial support, so she was not able to provide him with his special necessities. The venerable also bought him a hearing aid gadget to enable the boy to learn how to communicate.

In a short period of time, he has seen major improvements in his life.

Dharma Dassa family

A woman with three children lived in a tumbledown shed with her husband who was dying of Leukemia. The woman cultivated and took care of the vegetable crop. She also did some sewing to support her family. Early in the morning, she would go with her half year old child to Colombo to sell her products and she would return home only late in the evening. At home there would be staying and waiting, her four and eight year old girls and her ten year old boy. The oldest girl took care of their father and the house chores. The family suffered from denutrition (athrepsia). For several years the family was provided with a support in form of rice, small toys for the children and basic necessities.
